These are non-exclusive grouping of CMIP variables (e.g. monthly time slices of the baseline variables). Variables can belong to more than one group.

| justification | The 3-hourly atmosphere-ocean surface fluxes (freshwater, heat, and momentum) are required input, that will allow for a bias-adjustment of the oceanic forcings provided within ISIMIP. So far the oceanic forcing is not bias-adjusted although that is quite critical for the regional marine ecosystem and fisheries models that are calibrated by observational data. For a test case (sensitivity experiment in ISIMIP3b) we have developed a method to bypass the need for the fluxes. However, that is restricted to a specific ESM. The 3-hourly fluxes will allow for a more straight forward bias-adjustment of other ESMs, too. The approach is described in Lengaigne et al. (2024) (https://essopenarchive.org/users/717160/articles/1151003-an-ocean-only-framework-for-correcting-future-cmip-oceanic-projections-from-their-present-day-biases) and also described in the ISIMIP3b protocol paper (Frieler et al., 2024, to be submitted and available on request).
