These are the intended use-case/justification for one or multiple variable groups. Opportunities are linked to relevant experiment groups. Identifying opportunities helps to provide a structure to map variables against requirements. Each opportunity description will convey why this combination of variables and experiments is important and how they contribute to impact.

description | Opportunity to provide outputs of interest to marine biodiversity and ecosystem modellers to assess climate change impacts in marine ecosystems and for different ecological groups. The data are essential for running next generation ensemble projections for marine ecosystems within Fish-MIP, the Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project (Tittensor et al. 2018, DOI: https://doi.org/10.5194/gmd-11-1421-2018; Tittensor et al. 2021, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41558-021-01173-9), one of the impact sectors covered within ISIMIP. For the purpose of this opportunity the monthly variable group should have high priority, while the daily and 3h variable groups should have low priority. |

expected_impacts | The variables and experiments in this opportunity provide input to a broad set of fisheries and marine ecosystem models within Fish-MIP and beyond. The opportunity thus supports a broad set of use cases to model the positive and negative contributions of Nature to people. |
justification_of_resources | This request will facilitate a broad set of biodiversity and ecosystem services models, and will allow more process-based understanding of Nature’s contributions to people. This will directly contribute to the efforts of IPBES to improve understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem services changes and improve scenario work. |
