mip_abstract | The Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) is a coordinating framework, started in 2010, that includes a series of standardized climate model experiments aimed at understanding the physical processes and projected impacts of solar geoengineering. Numerous experiments have been conducted, and numerous more have been proposed as "Testbed'' experiments, spanning a variety of geoengineering techniques aimed at modifying the planetary radiation budget: stratospheric aerosol injection, marine cloud brightening, surface albedo modification, cirrus cloud thinning and sunshade mirrors. To date, more than one hundred studies have been published that used results from GeoMIP simulations, and its results have been recently used both in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report and in the WMO 2022 Ozone Report. For the GeoMIP phase connected with the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), three experiments have been proposed as Tier 1: G1ext, which aim to balance a 4×CO2 forcing via solar irradiance reduction, and is identical to previous experiments under older CMIP phases to allow for an evaluation of models' evolution; and G6sulfur and G6solar, which aim to reduce forcing from a ScenarioMIP Tier 1 high forcing scenario to a medium forcing scenario with stratospheric sulfate aerosols or solar reduction. One experiment has also been proposed as Tier 2: G7cirrus, which aims to reduce forcing by a constant amount (against a baseline of the ScenarioMIP Tier 1 high forcing scenario) via increasing cirrus ice crystal fall speed. For the future CMIP phase, based on current results, the community is working towards an updated minimal set of scenarios to be proposed, which try to balance scientific significance with policy relevance in order to produce useful results for future climate assessments. |
