| justification | Coastal flood damage is primarily the result of extreme sea levels and climate change is expected to drive an increase in these extremes. Extreme sea levels are primarily caused by storm surges often in combination with astronomical tides, waves and/or river overflow. Proper estimation of changes in storm surges is essential to estimate projected changes in extreme sea levels. The SurgeMIP (surge model intercomparison) community has been established to tackle challenges associated with predicting and projecting extreme sea levels which require reliable numerical prediction systems. Critical to this is having relevant climate-scale forcing data at the appropriate spatial and temporal scales.
