These are non-exclusive grouping of CMIP variables (e.g. monthly time slices of the baseline variables). Variables can belong to more than one group.

justification | This variable group is linked to the DynVarMIP opportunity and extends the set of dynvar_basic variables with a more detailed information on the parameterized forcings. Diagnostics of atmospheric momentum and energy transport are needed to investigate the origin of circulation biases in climate models and to understand the details of atmospheric circulation responses to natural and anthropogenic forcing. Variables of this group have already proved helpful in attributing parts of the CMIP6 circulation intermodel-spread to differences in unresolved driving (Abalos et al., 2021, ACP; Karpechko et al., 2024, JGR-A; Hájková and Šácha, 2023, CliDyn). The group includes a combination of zonal mean fields with reduced vertical level 3D fields and thus implies a reduced storage burden. Although medium priority, we highly recommend this group of variables for the attention of the modeling centers, because at a low cost this variable group has a potential to significantly contribute to the elucidation of the circulation model biases in the free atmosphere. |
