Category Description

These are the intended use-case/justification for one or multiple variable groups. Opportunities are linked to relevant experiment groups. Identifying opportunities helps to provide a structure to map variables against requirements. Each opportunity description will convey why this combination of variables and experiments is important and how they contribute to impact.

descriptionThe CMIP Panel agreed on providing a Rapid Evaluation Framework (REF) for new simulations that become available from upcoming CMIP phases. The idea is to evaluate and benchmark the newly available simulations as soon as they are uploaded to ESGF with metrics and diagnostics that are available through different open-source evaluation and benchmarking tools. The REF is envisioned to be available already for the Fast Track simulations, however, the available metrics and diagnostics will be limited to a temporal resolution of monthly mean data and a community selection of of about five metrics/diagnostics per realm. Results will be publicly displayed for the community to see.
expected_impactsThe suggested metrics/diagnostics for the REF to be available for the Fast Track simulations are in a first instance very basic evaluations and are not expected to require very specific variables. However, the impact of the publicly available evaluation and benchmarking results should be big since the community can get a quick overview of available simulations and their characteristics that might be interesting for different applications and analyses.
justification_of_resourcesThis opportunity does not ask for additional variables or experiments. In the contrary, it will make use of the already proposed experiments and will provide an overview of the characteristics of the simulations of these experiments (e.g. Fast Track).

technical_notesFor any groups with comments on the diagnostics included in the variable groups, please consider responding to the survey which closes on the 18th September -these variables are indicative as the consultation is still open. https://wcrp-cmip.org/have-your-say-diagnostics-and-reference-data-for-the-ar7-fast-track/
